My Favorite Metal/Punk Albums (in no particular order): |
| |
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Okay, so I said I wouldn't list them in any particular order, but if I had to pick a favorite band, it would be Megadeth, and "Tornado of Souls" is one of my favorite songs. |
| |
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
I think everyone agrees that this is a landmark album in the golden age of 80's metal. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is one of my all time favorite songs. |
| |
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith
Priest has such a huge catalog of titles that it's hard to say which is best in relative terms. I think in having to pick a personal favorite it would be this one. Like the opening lines of the first song, it's fast and furious, and "The Sentinel" is among my favorite tunes. |
| |
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Despite the fact that I haven't actually listened to this album in years, I absolutely have to label it among my favorites. I think this album refined the sound pioneered on Kill 'Em All and perfected it to create what I consider the mightiest of all Metallica albums. |
| |
Black Sabbath - We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll
I know that this actually a collection of songs from all of their albums, but it's definitely a compilation of the best Ozzy-era Black Sabbath with classic tracks. |
| |
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
As soon as I heard this album, I was a fan for life. Pivotal in defining what has become known as the Gothenburg sound, former members of ATG went on to found one of my other favorite bands, The Haunted. |
| |
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath
This was what I'd call my crossover album -- when it came out it took me from Maiden and Priest and some the glam metal of the time to Venom, Metallica, and Slayer. Great album, some of King Diamond's best work.
| |
Testament - The New Order
Testament (a.k.a. The Legacy) was among the early wave of thrash metal bands out of San Francisco. This was their second album, and one of my favorites. |
| |
Slayer - Hell Awaits
I know that Reign in Blood is frequently referred to as their defining moment in 80's thrash, but for sentimental reasons, this album remains my favorite Slayer disc. |
| |
The Hookers - From the Battle of Contlarf to the Gates of Valhalla
Hands down, one of my favorite bands, this 2 CD collection includes singles released throughout the lifetime of the band, and is best representative of their special brand of rock. |
| |
Coroner - Punishment for Decadence
One of my personal favorite albums from a lesser known thrash band of the 80's. This Swiss metal act mixed blistering fast licks as rythyms with raw power to make one of the first great technical speed metal albums. |
| |
Anthrax - Fistful of Metal
I know I'm in the minority among Anthrax fans here, but Fistful of Metal is one of my all time favorites. While I enjoyed their later music, I never liked Belladonna's vocals. This disc is chock full of genre defining thrash metal. |
| |
The Haunted - The Dead Eye
Two years ago, my pick would have been their last album, rEVOLVEr, because I insist that this band gets better and better with each album. This band -- in my humble opinion -- is the best thrash metal act working today, period. |
| |
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Opeth is a unique Swedish act with serious class and style. I didn't think anything could top their album Blackwater Park until I heard Ghost Reveries. |
| |
W.A.S.P. - W.A.S.P.
Emerging from the muck of glam metal was the gem that was W.A.S.P. To this day, their albums stand head and shoulders above the contemporaries of their day. With raw emotion and talent, Blackie Lawless and gang remain a significant influence in the genre. |
| |
DIO - Holy Diver
Yes, many of the singles off this album went on to be classics, but you can't fully appreciate the greatness of this album without listening to it from beginning to end. |
| |
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
A toss up between this one and Vulgar Display of Power, this album ultimately wins out for its sheer onslaught of brutality. |
| |
Trouble - Trouble
This is Trouble's best, and yet least available album. Someone really needs to bring this one back into print. |
| |
Alice In Chains - Dirt
In retrospect, this is the band and album that stands above the rest of the grunge era purveyors of rock and metal. Solid music, plenty of emotion. |
| |
G.B.H - City Baby Attacked By Rats
Contains a lot of my Clay-era favorites from these guys, along with the follow-up classic City Baby's Revenge. |
| |
Guns N' Roses - Unse Your Illusion I
Yes, I know most people say Appetite for Destruction is their best, but again for sentimental reasons, this is my favorite GNR album. "Dust and Bones" is one of my all time favorite songs. |
| |
Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes
Long before there was Bam Magera, there was Turbonegro. This album, along with Ass Cobra, are classics of modern punk rock, or Death Punk, as they coined the term. |
| |
Nuclear Assualt - Survive
Co-founded by two former members of Anthrax, some argue that this album and band didn't really stand out among the greats of the day, but I disagree, and pick this one as my favorite of their offerings. |
| |
Gluecifer - Soraing with Eagles at Night to Rise with the Pigs in the Morning
A straight-up great record from these Oslo, Norway rock heroes. This one, along with Riding the Tiger, were among my favorites from these guys. |
| |
Venom - Black Metal
Last but certainly not least is the album that gave seed to the genre that would become black metal. Loud, raucous, and irreverent, this early extreme metal masterpiece just plain rocks. |
